The Secret to Growing Containers Full of Incredible Flowers
May 31, 2010
During the summer, containers brimming with large, healthy, colorful plants can create a stunning accent to any garden. Unfortunately, while there’s plenty of advice out there on what to grow (e.g., a thriller, a spiller, and a filler), there’s not much about how to make it look its best. The secret is all in the soil – compost, long-acting fertilizer, and fast-acting fertilizer, all added at the proper time and in the proper amounts.
Just follow these tips and you’ll have the best containers on the block!
- When planting your containers, use a mixture of 2/3 potting mix and 1/3 organic mix, such as compost.
- Add organic fertilizer (e.g., Flower Tone) at half strength and mix well.
- Plant your annuals about 1/3 closer than the specified spacing—you want them to fill the container and spill out.
- Use 1/2 strength Miracle Grow every two weeks through the growing season.
- At the end of June (when the soil is over 70°F), top-dress with 1/2 strength Osmocote.
